Herceg Novi enjoys a special Mediterranean microclimate within the Bay of Kotor. The city is famous for its lush subtropical vegetation, including palm trees, mimosas, oleanders, and exotic plants that thrive year-round.
🌴 Fun fact: The annual Mimosa Festival in February celebrates the city's unique ability to grow subtropical plants!
Located at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, Herceg Novi benefits from protection of the surrounding mountains while still receiving refreshing sea breezes. This creates milder temperatures and more sunshine compared to deeper bay locations.
☀️ Advantage: More sunny days than Kotor or Perast, less rain than inner bay areas!

💡 Pro Tip: Herceg Novi's Old Town has 1,000+ stairs! Bring comfortable shoes regardless of season.
Herceg Novi's position at the bay entrance gives it more sunshine and less rainfall than inner bay towns like Kotor. The mild climate allows palm trees, bougainvillea, and even banana plants to thrive year-round.
Nickname origin: "Botanical Garden of Montenegro" due to 200+ plant species!
During summer, the maestral (sea breeze) provides natural air conditioning in the afternoons, making temperatures feel cooler than inland Montenegro. This makes beach days comfortable even when temperatures reach 30°C.
Best time for sailing: June-September with consistent afternoon breezes
While Bay of Kotor is known for heavy rainfall, Herceg Novi receives significantly less (about 1,800mm annually vs. 5,000mm in Crkvice deeper in the bay). Most rain falls in November-January, while summer months are almost completely dry.
Driest months: July & August - perfect beach weather!
Snow is extremely rare in Herceg Novi - it might happen once every 5-10 years! Winters are mild with temperatures rarely dropping below 5°C. This makes it an ideal winter escape for those from colder climates.
Winter bonus: Mimosa trees bloom from late January - stunning yellow flowers!
The Garden of Montenegro awaits with perfect weather and stunning beauty!
